Top of the Rock (Space edition) - Day 2
Breakfast
Unlike the previous day we did not feast on New Yorks famus Bagels but we went to a small Deli that is just around the corner of our Hotel which has everything from a Panini to fresh cut fruitbowls.
Intrepid
Afterwards we decided to go to the Piers and visit the Intrepid Air and Sea museum. It houses one of the remaining Concorde jet planes as well as the Enterprise, no not the starship Enterprise but the Space Shuttle Enterprise. This was the Atmosphereic prototype build to evaluate the flight capabilities of the future space shuttles. It sadly never went to space since NASA made several changes to the space shuttles and decided that upgrading the Enterprise would be too expensive.
As part of the 50 year celebration of the Star Trek franchise it also houses an interactive exhibition around everything Star Trek. This includes a number of interessting Trek Talks from actual Scientists.
On our way to the pier we also saw a gigantic cruise ship (from Norway?). Even the 900 foot long Intrepid aircraft carrier looks less impressive next to such a beast.
As part of the city pass we had access to the Growler submarine and the decks of the Intrepid. We booked the Space shuttle pavillion and a guided tour extra. The tour detailed the Pacific campaign in World War II with a focus on the role the Intrepid played. Our guide Ryan did an excellent job to explain everything. The group was only comprised of 6 people so it was quite personal. the tour lasted a little more than an hour. We wandered a bit around decks, especially the flight deck which houses several helicopters and planes from propeller machines to an A12 aka SR71 blackbird. At the far end the space shuttle stands in a hangarlike pavillion along with other space themed exhibits.
What looks like Asia, smells like Asia and sounds like Asia?
Flushing in Queens of course :)
After such an spacey morning we were hungry and made our way to Flushing Main street in Queens. This is the real Chinatown as it houses one of the fastest growing Asian neighborhoods. The trainride lasts about 40 min and the terminal station lets you out right in the middle of the buzzing streets filled with Asian restaurants and Spas.
We went for the foodcourt in the New World Mall close the to the metro station. Needless to say we were quite overwhelmed with all the smell and sights of delicious food.
Top of the Rock
With a full belly we took the subway back to Manhattan to climb on top of the Rockefeller center. This is also part of the city pass but it is mutually exclusive with the Guggenheim Museum, So chose wisely. The plaza itself houses numerous shops and cafés including an amazing Lego store with replicas of famous New York places but in Lego. Fun fact: the Intrepid Main deck also showed the lovingly recreated replica in 1/40 scale of the ship it stands in.
It proved a bit challenging to find the entrance of the Top of the Rock Observation platform but the view was definitely worth it.
Secret Life of Pets
To wrap up the day we went to Times Square to watch a movie at the AMC 25 cinema. That complex is huuuge, as the name suggests it contains 25 show rooms and on the first floor you can not only get snacks but full fledged pepperoni pizzas is you so wish. The downside being that merely getting a bottle of water took the better part of 20 minutes as I am not a stubs premium VIP member who have the their own fast lane.
The secret life of pets which incidentally also plys in New York City is a fast and funny movie that will leave you a smile on your face but most likely not change your life :)
